Migrating Sandpipers
Karl Gerstenberger and I visited the upper Bay of Fundy, August 12-13, 2015. We found over 120,000 Semipalmated Sandpipers at Johnson's Mills, on the Dorchester Cape. These birds are a small fraction of the nearly two million that migrate south each year in mid-August through the upper Bay of Fundy, fattening up on the ecologically rich exposed mudflats before their long journey to South America.
